OLIVIA AND ISABELLA GERASOLE: The Spatulatta Sisters
    Questions
    1. Tell three different places where you can get a great meal where you live. Pick one of these places and tell what makes this food so good.
    2. How did the Spatulatta girls get their start cooking? (Tell how they first learned, and then what two things they did next.)
    3. The girls think it is important that kids know that food doesn’t really come from a box, or pre-packaged. Why do you think this might be important to know?
    4. Tell some sections of the Spatulatta cookbook. Why do you think the book might be divided by seasons?
    5. Many people, including kids, are vegetarians. a. Define “vegetarian”. b. Find out and write down why some people believe in being vegetarian.
    6. Where did the recipes for the cookbook come from?
    7. a. Why do the sisters get along so well? (What do they like about each other?) b. Do you think you could work that well with your sister(s) and/or brother(s)? Why or why not?
    8. Can you name some “American” foods that actually comes from other countries?
        Activities
          A) Copy, or better yet, create your own recipe. Bring the recipe to school along with the actual food you made using this recipe. Your teacher will create a class cookbook using all of your delicious recipes. (Maybe you can even take pictures of your dishes and put them with each recipe. B) Each student can choose and research a specific regional cuisine, (like: Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Cuban, English, French, Italian, etc.) and then write a report including the following information: What ingredients are grown in that region, special spices, well-known dishes, historical information on how some of the dishes were developed, a couple of recipes, and pictures. C) Draw an attractive cover, putting the type of ethnic food, a picture (and your name) on it. Make a multi-ethnic bulletin board using completed reports.
