Questions
  1. Define the word, species. How many species of birds can be found in New York City’s Central Park? What is the Audubon Society? Who was James Audubon?
  2. What do you need to have in order to start bird watching?
  3. Tell 3 things you need to know in order to be a good bird watcher. Make sure you explain why each of these things is important.
  4. What is another way of identifying birds besides seeing them with your eyes?
  5. Why do you think there are so many more species of birds in Central Park in the spring or fall compared to the summer?
Activities
  1. Get or make a journal. Keep a record in your journal for a week (or a month) and write down each kind of bird you see, where you were when you saw it, and what the conditions were. (just like Glenn Phillips does!)
  2. You can even make sketches of each bird. You can borrow a field guide from the library to identify your birds and write down some interesting facts about them.
  3. Choose a bird that interests you and write a report on it. Include its: habitat reproduction, and some interesting behaviors/facts about it. www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/
  4. Many species of bird are becoming extinct. See if you can research and find out some of the reasons why this is happening. (See Audubon on line, the web site in activity B or other bird sites.) Share this information with your class.
