Photography: Beyond the Wall Jerusalem

  1. Why was the organization “Kids With Cameras” started?

(Extra Deep Thinking Question) A camera is not a weapon or money or fame- which are what many people think we need in order to have power, or influence, over other people. How might photography give us power in a different way?)

  2. a. Where did Jason Eskenazi choose to go to do his camera project with kids? b. What two groups of children did he work with there? c. What made it so difficult to do his teaching?
  3. What then became the ‘common language’ between the two groups of children?
  4. . Define “chaotic” (verb for chaos). b. Give an example of chaos you have experienced and how it was resolved.
  5. What did the Arab and Israeli children learn about each other from looking at each other’s pictures? (A great example of the power of photography!)
  6. What doee Mr. Eskenazi say is the most important thing to portray in a photograph? What three tools of “visual language” can be used to portray emotions in photos?
  7. Why is this project called “Beyond the Wall...”? Tell the two meanings of “wall”.

Activities

A) Take a photograph of an important place, event, or person in your life. (Try to use the tips listed below the video to get the best picture you can!) Then write a story or poem about your picture. Share it out loud with your class, or have all the pictures and stories put up on a bulletin board.

B) Instead of a writing a written diary or journal, make a photo journal of your life over a period of time (could be a week, a month, or longer). Then, with a classmate (or two), take turns sharing and talking about each other’s photographs. It will be fun to see how your lives might be similar and unique!
